Fucking microphones

I cannot get a microphone to work properly in any machine I try. I have tried three different mics in three different computers that use two different OSs (XP and Vista). None detect any sound.

In XP, I have upgraded the Realtek Audio sound drivers. Nothing.

In Vista, I have tried to reinstall the sound drivers, but I keep getting an error (code -5009 0x8002802b, to be precise). Before that, though, I messed with every setting I could see. The thing is detected, but it detects no sound whatsoever. The switch is on. It's in the right port. The settings are correct, I am certain. This is true both in the front and rear panels.

It must be something even simpler, I think, but I can't think of what that could be. The computers are on and the output is fine (except one of the Vista machines, now that I have borked the sound).

This is so frustrating. There was a time where I would just plug it in and it would work. Now...?

If anyone can help, please get in contact with me.

I don't have much experience with microphones, but when I did have some trouble a while ago (using XP) the solution was insanely simple -- and it was insane that the problem existed (evidence of Microsoft retardedness).

In my case I had to go into the Control Panel and open the Sound and Audio Devices dialog box. Then go to the Audio tab and click "Volume" for the "Sound Recording Device" item in the middle. By default ALL devices were de-selected. So I checked the "Select" box for Jack Mic, set a volume level, and I was in business.

That's probably not your problem, but hey, it was mine!

Tried that already. Nothing seems to work. I just don't understand.
