Have any of you ever read about a story (fiction, I assume) where someone who was born mentally retarded, challenged or whatever, was "cured", either suddenly through magic or a miracle, or maybe through a gradual process? I'd like to hear how a normal person who experienced mental retardation or brain damage describes such a state.

I can't say I've heard of such a tale, so many stories are about the magic being found within the mentally challenged person's psyche. It's the obvious protagonist who learns to understand it or manages to attain it.
Sorry I can't help you with that. However, if you want to witness the opposite effect (people born "normal" and then suddently turning brain damaged and/or retarded as adults) just ride the Metro every day. You'll see dozens!
Try "flowers for Algernon"
"... ride the Metro every day."
HAHA Brilliant!
Check the Oliver Sacks books, such as "An Anthropologist on Mars" :

That book doesn't cover what you're searching for, but maybe his other do. At least, they hold a lot of experience and insights.
