She hasn't gotten any darker

I asked my sister for new pictures, and here they are:

Here she is being held by my mom. Doesn't she look like a star? I am NOT gushing.

Here are two more taken at around 4 weeks of age.

Just to contrast (!) with her siblings, this is how different they are from the baby. Somehow, the father's whiteness came through. P asked me that perhaps maybe his blackness could come through in his baby, were he to have one. He does have soul, but he might need a little more...luck...we'll say.

Did I mention that the father is white with blond hair and blue eyes? Obviously this explains the whiteness, but for it to come through against the genetic odds is rather interesting, I think.

Brush with death

So I found out recently that I nearly died a few months ago.

My oven went kaput a few months ago. I took the advice of some guys at the local hardware store and started tinkering in the back panel. I powered off the main switch for the oven and unplugged everything as I was working. All that did was result in a short circuit. After some time, I finally got sick of using the toaster oven. I asked Rose to call a repair man and he arrived on Tuesday. He had seen what I had done, because I didn't replace everything, and because I had told Rose what to tell him. He said that there was still electricity in the oven, and that if I had touched another surface that would have been the end of me. Poor Rose would have come home to a smoking body.

I guess I'm lucky to be alive. Lesson: don't listen to a bunch of hacks from a hardware store. Listen only to the real deal.

UPDATE: Please check out my little Radio.Blog on the left hand side of the main page of this blog, currently only available in this skin. This week, it's Massive Attack's 100th Window, which is a good album if you are familiar with them, and great if you are not.

Mathematical relationships

One of my best friends, Saab, who I met while studying math at McGill, got married yesterday in Wisconsin. It was rather sudden in the sense that although I knew last fall that they wanted to get married at some point, they didn't want to actually do it until next July. Why did they do it yesterday? She's not pregnant, if that's what you might have been thinking.

Two years ago, he left Montreal to go to Egypt to teach math to bratty rich Egyptians. (What do you call a person from Cairo? Caironian?) His contract was for two years. He was amazed at the lack of interesting women he saw there until the end of his first year. I was shocked when I learned last summer that he was twitterpated, and that after a few months he was ready to pop the question. I put my institutional doubts aside, knowing that he is an eternal believer, and congratulated him.
