Angel Wings

I would like to present my new niece, Ava Jane Elliott, born April 12, 2005. You can’t really see, but she has deep blue eyes. As I understand it, if they haven’t changed colour after a month, they probably won’t. She is also white as a ghost (for a person that is technically black), although I expect her to darken a little. Interesting story about her older sister: When she was less than a year old, the family was shopping somewhere when the girl started throwing a super fuss. Bil (white brother-in-law) decided to take her outside. A man, not believing that this Aryan could be the father of this black baby and was abducting her, followed JP and prevented him from leaving. He had to go back into the store and be cleared by my sister (who, at the time, didn’t take it seriously because she thought that the man knew JP). Needless to say, although the man did apologize and probably did the right thing, JP was quite pissed.

Here's a question: Would you have noticed such a thing, and if so, would you investigate?

For me, it's no so much an issue of race but of gender. Unfortunately, any man walking with a child who doesn't appear to be his would be suspicious. And, if she was screaming or causing a fuss, that would draw even more attention to him. When I was a kid (during the FLQ crisis in Montreal and tensions were pretty high) my mother was walking me home from ballet class after dark when a man ran past us and scooped up a little girl who was walking ahead of us. My mother was horrified and yelled at the man to let her go. It turned out that it was her father. Unfortunately, men are always going to be held under greater scrutiny where their interactions with kids are concerned.
