When you buy FFXI, you get a free month... I'd sponsor you for a month, as long as you don't create too many characters. (It's $1 extra per character per month, added to the base, eh.. $12.95 per month to play - all USD of course.)
I've developed a system to ensure that I play enough time equivalent to how long it would take me to make enough money to pay for it. That way, I don't feel too badly if I don't play for a bit. It's a really fun game though - I promise that.
